Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Holyhead

MCL were contracted by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to shrink 4 propeller shaft bearings for their all-weather Severn class lifeboat based at Holyhead.

All 4 bearings were cooled in liquid nitrogen and then fitted in either end of the 2 propeller shafts by the Holyhead Marine technicians.

Once the bearings had returned to their ambient temperature and size, the propeller shafts could then be re-fitted.

The Photographs show:

  • The RNLI Severn class lifeboat.

  • The bearings being cooled.

  • Fitting by the technician.

  • The bearing in its final position.
